When Spirit Speaks: A Medium's Journey from Childhood Visions to Helping Others

The path of a psychic medium is rarely straightforward. For Marty, known professionally as "Marty the Psychic," the journey began at just four and a half years old—sparked by tragedy and shaped by gifts passed down through generations of Italian women in her family.

A Gift Born from Grief

Marty's abilities first manifested following the death of her 14-year-old brother when she was only four and a half. While her mother withdrew into isolation, young Marty experienced nightly visitations from her brother. He would appear to her, speaking of people she'd never met—her grandmother's cousins from Italy whose names even her mother didn't know.

"I thought he was in the room with me," Marty recalls. "I wasn't sure if they were dreams."

The gift ran in her family. Her grandmother (her "nona") and her grandmother's two sisters had all possessed similar abilities after emigrating from Italy. Yet despite this family history, no one explained to young Marty what was happening to her.

A Frightening Premonition

The turning point came in third or fourth grade with a vision so disturbing it left Marty terrified of her own abilities. She repeatedly saw a Catholic school burning to the ground, with nuns and students perishing in the flames. School-phobic since her brother's death, she became even more reluctant to attend, insisting to her family that "the school's going to burn down."

The next morning, the radio announced that a Catholic grammar school in Chicago had indeed burned, with nuns and students killed in the fire—exactly as she had foreseen.

"I'm thinking, did I make this happen?" Marty remembers. "It was very frightening."

Years of Uncertainty

Throughout her school years, Marty's abilities continued to manifest, though she didn't fully understand them. She would tell classmates about future events—who would date whom, when a nun would fall. The predictions came true, but the girls were too young to grasp the significance.

"We were so young, we didn't think nothing of it," she says. "It just seemed like whatever."

In those days, psychic abilities weren't openly discussed. People "looked at you like you had two heads," so Marty largely avoided dealing with her gift through high school and into her twenties.

The Cousin's Club Revelation

The dam finally broke at a family gathering in Marty's mid-to-late twenties. At a "cousins club" meeting where relatives discussed her long-hidden abilities, Marty shocked everyone by revealing details about her cousin Sunny's affair—including that it was with his wife's best friend, a woman whose face "looks like a pumpkin" and whose name was Barbara.

Total silence followed. Two months later, Sunny left his wife for Barbara, exactly as Marty had seen.

The Turning Point

Despite her growing awareness of her abilities, Marty pursued a conventional career as a clinical psychologist and psychiatric social worker at CSC. Then illness struck—suddenly and severely. Unable to walk, confined to a wheelchair for about a year and a half, Marty believes this forced pause happened "for a reason."

That reason became clear when two police officers arrived to take a report about her son's stolen truck. Officer Antonetta was admiring Marty's antiques when Marty brushed past her and suddenly knew things she couldn't possibly know: "You have an aunt, Anna. And there's this lady Marie caring for her."

When Marty told Antonetta she needed to visit her aunt in the Bronx immediately or she'd never say goodbye, the skeptical Officer Diana accused her of reading the name off a badge. Three days later, both officers returned—with a white candle to thank Marty. The aunt had indeed passed the night after their visit, and Antonetta had been able to see her one last time.

That encounter led to Marty working on police cases, beginning with investigations from the local precinct.

How Marty Works

During readings, Marty uses automatic writing—not in a trance state, but as a way to record what comes through for her clients. "They just come right through," she explains. "I can't explain it. You just have to say it."

The spirits communicate with remarkable specificity. In one demonstration, messages came through for multiple people in the room: references to deceased loved ones, significant dates, childhood friends, and deeply personal details that Marty couldn't have known through conventional means.

She also gave comfort regarding a missing person case—a friend named Barbara who disappeared over 25 years ago. Marty described seeing marshland, tributaries, and a marina, with remains on a "makeshift grassy island." The details aligned disturbingly well with what was known about the case.

The Cost and the Calling

Psychic work isn't without its challenges. Marty's husband Joe has witnessed spirits messing with household items and making noises when Marty isn't home. The couple has learned that when they get "too many pokers in the fire," the universe finds ways to slow them down—sometimes dramatically.

Despite having 751 people on her waiting list, Marty continues her work, driven by a sense of purpose that goes beyond herself. As she puts it, "I really want to send the blessings to everybody."

A Legacy of Connection

What began as a frightening childhood experience has transformed into a calling that brings comfort to the grieving and closure to those with unfinished business. Through her gifts, Marty serves as a bridge between worlds, delivering messages of peace, love, and reassurance from those who have passed.

Her journey reminds us that spiritual gifts, however they manifest, often come with a purpose—even if it takes years to understand and accept that purpose fully. For Marty, that purpose is clear: to help others connect with loved ones on the other side and to know, as she tells her clients, that those who have passed are "at peace now."

Due to high demand, Marty currently has an extensive waiting list for readings.
